This Thanksgiving, Be More Grateful than Wasteful
 
Amidst groans of being more stuffed than the bird itself, Americans will toss a whopping $282 million of uneaten turkey into the trash this Thanksgiving, contributing to the $165 billion in uneaten food Americans waste every year.  Along with trashing uneaten turkeys, they’ll be wasting the resources necessary for its production -- meaning 105 billion gallons of water (enough to supply New York City for over 100 days) and greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to 800,000 car trips from New York to San Francisco.  That’s enough turkey to provide each American household that is food insecure with more than 11 additional servings, and 17.9 million American households suffer from food insecurity.
The USDA reports that 35% of perfectly good turkey meat in the U.S. does not get eaten after it is purchased by consumers (and that’s not including bones).  This compares with only 15% for chicken.  Why is so much more turkey wasted than chicken?  “Possibly because turkey is more often eaten during holidays when consumers may tend to discard relatively more uneaten food than on other days,” the USDA writes.
This outlandish wastefulness may seem absurd, but only because it’s rare that we stop and appreciate just how much goes into getting food to our tables.  It’s the ultimate irony, really.  We feast to celebrate that our ancestors had enough food to survive their first winter, acknowledging that once upon a time food was something to be grateful for.  Then the next day, we throw half of it away.

Why you should mulch leaves, not rake them

Mulching is great for your wallet (and your back!) Shredded leaves control certain weeds and also provide soil with much-needed winter nutrients.

It’s the annual fall dilemma. The leaves that have fallen on the lawn need to be removed, but there are more on the trees. Should you rake them up now or wait until the limbs are bare?
 
Neither! Bag the rake, not the leaves.
 
Instead of raking leaves, stuffing them into lawn bags and hauling the bags to the curb, mow them with a mulching mower – a lawnmower with a specially designed high deck and a mulching blade that chops leaves into fragments as tiny as confetti. As the shredded leaves decompose, they will act as a natural fertilizer and weed control agent.
 
For those who insist on a spotless lawn year-round and might be concerned about what the neighbors will think of the brown leaf bits the mower leaves behind, don’t worry. The shredded leaves will filter through the grass and disappear from sight. In northern lawns that go dormant or in grasses such as Bermuda or zoysia that turn a dormant brown color in winter, the shredded leaves may even blend right in. Better yet, if you continue this practice each fall, in a few years mulching can help you have a luscious spring and summer lawn free of dandelions and crabgrass that will be the envy of people up and down the street.

The problem with fall leaves
Leaves that are not removed from your lawn block sunlight and air from reaching the grass. The problem becomes worse when it rains or there are early snows that turn fluffy layers of leaves into soggy mats. The lack of light and air circulation can cause turf diseases or, in a worst-case scenario, may even smother the grass and kill it.
 
The answer
Homeowners can easily solve this problem with a mulching mower. “Mulching mowers are designed with a high deck and are shaped so that the mulching blade spins leaves and grass more than once as it cuts them into small pieces,” said Kevin Morris, president of the National Turfgrass Federation. Just change the mower to its highest setting, remove the bag attachment and mow the leaves and grass, letting the shredded leaves and grass blades remain on the lawn. If you don’t have a mulching mower, an alternative is to buy a mulching blade from a hardware store a – mulching blades have special serrated edges – and attach it to the mower. Morris cautions, though, that regular lawn mowers may not shred leaves as well as a mulching mower because regular mowers may not re-circulate leaves inside the deck the way that mulching mowers do. Mowers with side shoots or old-fashioned push mowers can be used, but also are not as effective in shredding leaves into small pieces as mulching mowers. If you use a landscaping service, ask them to use a mulching mower in the fall and not bag the leaves.
 
When to mulch
The optimum time to shred fallen leaves is when you can still see some grass poking up through them. Depending on the number and size of trees on your property – or your neighbor’s – you may need to mow your yard more than once a week. Studies by turf grass specialists at Michigan State University show that up to six inches of leaves can be mulched at one time, depending on the type of mower you have. There’s also a common sense approach about when to mulch. If the leaves are so thick that they make mowing difficult, you may need to add the bag attachment or even rake them. You can also put the bag attachment on a mulching mower and spread mulched leaves on landscape and vegetable beds.
 
What not to do
Don’t wait until spring to mulch leaves and spread them on landscaped beds.  If you place leaves on garden beds in the fall, they will biodegrade almost completely, if not completely, by spring. If, on the other hand, leaves are not placed on garden beds until spring, the decomposition process will compete with plants for nutrients just when the plants need it most, to make energy to produce the flowers you’ve waited all winter to enjoy!
 
Why mulching works
Micro-organisms that live in the soil beak down organic material such as leaves. Worms get in on the action, too. The roots of some grasses such as fescue can grow slowly in the fall and a mild winter and the decaying action of mulched leaves left on the yard will provide these roots with nutrients. Mulched leaves will biodegrade and disappear from the lawn by spring. The same type of activity with micro-organisms and worms that is happening in the lawn area is also happening in landscape and vegetable beds.
 
Benefits
Shredding leaves with a mulching mower will save homeowners time and money. Mulching is faster and far easier on the back than raking. It’s also easier on the wallet. The decomposing leaves and grass cover the soil between the individual grass plants where weeds can germinate. MSU studies found that homeowners can attain a nearly 100 percent decrease in dandelions and crabgrass after mulching fall leaves for just three years. In addition to reducing the occurrence of weeds and the need to spend money on weed control products, mulched leaves keep the soil warmer in winter and cooler in summer and the nutrients provided by mulching reduce the amount and expense of fertilizer need to achieve green-up in the spring.
 
Bonus tip
If you are using a side-discharge mower, begin mowing on the outside edge of your lawn, making sure that you shoot the leaves toward the middle of the yard. Mowing in this pattern also allows you to mow over the leaves more than once and keeps them from ending up on sidewalks, driveways and the road. If the leaves are still in fairly large pieces after your first pass, go back over the lawn at a right angle to your first cut.
 
Other options
Depending on how many hardwoods you or your neighbors have, you can use leaf blowers to blow leaves into landscaped beds or use a lawn vacuum to vacuum up leaves. Leaf vacuums will produce finely chopped leaves that are excellent for placing in flower or vegetable beds. When spreading leaves in garden beds, be careful not to smother ground covers.
 
Whatever you do, don’t let fall leaves get away. Use them somewhere in your landscape!

Wildlife Wednesday - November is Manatee Awareness Month

Manatees are such beautiful creatures and even though they are pretty common place in South Florida, I still get excited when I see them.  Below are some photos I took of manatees grazing at one of the City’s parks this past January. 
 
 
 
Did you know that November is Manatee Awareness Month? A time to celebrate the gentle giants. Relatives of the elephant, manatees spend a lot of time grazing on aquatic plants in shallow, slow moving-water bodies and are sometimes referred to as sea cows. Because Florida manatees are an endangered species, it’s especially important that people know more about these wonderful animals and what we can do to protect them. This Solar-Powered Electric Bike May Be Even Greener Than A Regular Bicycle

Compared to cars, electric bikes have a tiny carbon footprint. Still, if you're charging your bike with coal-powered electricity, it isn't completely clean transportation. A new solar-powered electric bike called the Dutch Solar Cycle is an attempt to change that.
The design isn't the first to build solar power into an electric bike, but it uses unique technology that makes it possible to charge the bike even when it's cloudy outside or the solar panels get dirty. Its nano-inverter allows the harvesting of more energy from a single solar cell, allowing the bike's creator, the Solar Application Lab, to create solar products that operate even in under non-ideal conditions.
As the bike sits outside or someone rides, the solar panels on the wheel send power to a battery through induction, the same process used to charge an electric toothbrush. On a bright and sunny day, the battery can fully charge in four to six hours. In bad weather, it might take twice as long.
Unlike typical electric bikes, the Solar Cycle doesn't have to come inside to charge, and a cyclist doesn't have to remember to plug it in before it's ready to use. With ordinary use and enough time in the sun, the battery should never empty. If the battery does run low, it's also possible to manually charge it or just pedal like an ordinary bike.
The designers worked to fully integrate solar panels into the design, rather than adding them as an afterthought. The team is building a prototype of the bike that will be ready for testing next June and will ride the bike in a 5,000-mile race for electric bicycles. They hope to have a fully market-ready product three years later. It won't be cheap: Even when the technology is being manufactured at scale, it may add a $500-$600 premium to the cost of a bike.
Technically, it may be even more sustainable than a regular bike for longer distances. One study found that the carbon footprint of a bicycle is already roughly equal to an electric bike, thanks to the energy used to grow food to feed a cyclist.
Riding a bike creates 21 grams of carbon emissions per kilometer, while an ordinary electric bike creates only about 22 grams. This version would trim that down to almost nothing—coming close to the goal of a truly zero-emissions vehicle.

Eastern White Pine

While we don’t have Eastern White Pines in South Florida, I still thought it was an interesting story and I know many of you grew up in the Northeast so you may remember them!

The eastern white pine has played a very important role throughout the history of America. In colonial days, the best of the trees were set apart by the king for masts on British ships. As the nation grew, the lumber of white pines built our homes and businesses. Today it is still a valuable commercial tree but also favored in parks and spacious yards—both for its beauty and its fast growth.
 
Once filling the forests of the eastern United States, few white pines stand in their natural, massive splendor. But noteworthy specimens can still be found. In Merrill, Maine, the largest white pine in the country stands 132 feet tall. Cathedral Pines, just south of Cornwall, Connecticut, is one of the largest stands of white pines—spared from the lumber industry in 1883 by an early tree lover. And the oldest known eastern white pine, estimated to be 450 years old, can be found in Nelson Swamp Unique Area of Madison County, New York.

How forests benefit from grey squirrels who forget where they put their nuts!

An imperfect memory saves forests
Rob Swihart, a wildlife ecologist at Purdue University, researched the habits of grey squirrels as they collect nuts and store them for winter food. Because grey squirrels compete with many other animals for the same food source, they tend to bury nuts in many, many secret stashes all over their forest habitat. They can't always get back to spots where they've buried their nuts, either because they forgot where they are or perhaps they've become a meal for another forest animal. That forgotten stash often ends up sprouting into new nut-bearing trees which benefit many animals in the ecosystem.
 
This is more beneficial to deciduous forests than the habits of red squirrels, which stash their winter food all in one pile. The habit works fine when red squirrels are foraging in evergreen forests and collecting pine cones, the seeds of which can survive fine in these large piles. But when red squirrels are foraging in deciduous forests and storing nuts in these same large piles, the nuts tend to dry out and die. They can't sprout into new trees, which means fewer nut-bearing trees and less diverse and healthy forests.
 
Even though the fallibility of grey squirrels' memories is beneficial to forests, the fact that they remember as much as they do is astounding. According to research published in Princeton University's journal "Animal Behavior," grey squirrels can remember not only where they buried their caches but also how much is in them. A study showed that squirrels will return first to the caches with the larger amounts of food.

How to Recycle Halloween Pumpkins for Wildlife

One of my favorite parts of Halloween, is carving pumpkins. My evening walks through the neighborhood are even better with the bright orange pumpkins, highlighting the colors of autumn, and showing off creative designs.
After the trick-or-treaters clear away, and Halloween is officially over, don’t trash your pumpkins! There are several ways to recycle them with wildlife and your garden in mind. How do you reuse pumpkins in your yard?

1. Compost Your Pumpkins
If you’ve carved a jack-o-lantern, it may already be decomposing. Pumpkins are 90% water, which means they easily and quickly break down. This makes them a great addition to your compost pile. Prevent unwanted pumpkin plants by removing the seeds first (set seeds aside for #3 and #5). If you don’t have a compost bin or pile, check your local government, nearby farms, or community gardens to see if they collect old pumpkins.

2. Make a Snack-o-Lantern
This is one of the most creative ideas I’ve seen to recycle pumpkins. You can turn your jack-o-lantern into a snack-o-lantern for wildlife! It’s fairly easy to make, and the squirrels and birds will love it.
 
 
3. Leave Seeds for Wildlife
Large birds and small mammals will eat pumpkin seeds if you offer them in your yard. Collect seeds from your pumpkins, before composting them, and let the seeds dry. Please don’t add salt or seasoning. Place seeds on a flat surface, tray, shallow bowl, or mix in with existing bird seed in your garden.

4. Cut it into Pieces for Animals
Many backyard animals will eat pieces of pumpkin flesh. You can cut it into pieces and leave it out. This porcupine doesn’t even need it cut into pieces!
 
5. Plant Pumpkin Seeds
The squash bee is one of many insects to pollinate pumpkin flowers. If you have room in your yard, you can save seeds for a harvest of pumpkins next year.

UPDATE: Please keep in mind this applies to non-painted pumpkins, as the toxins in paint can be harmful to wildlife. Also, keep pumpkins away from the house, ideally near trees. Add other helpful suggestions in the comments below!
